BAND OF THE WEEK: KÖRGULL THE EXTERMINATOR
...from Spain!! so this is it! one of VERY few bands that gave me a quintessent black metal feeling since 1992/93. and i say this after having listened to their DOGS OF WAR album 2.5 hours non stop this morning. already i knew ABOUT them, cuz Oscar from OLD mentioned he played a gig with them or something down in Spain...and then i ventured upon them on myspace and immediately liked their sound. but the best listenings were yet to come. first i heard their WILL TO TAKE RISKS on their "the dark riders" song, risks that we also took on "under a funeral moon" and i am talking about taking risks with the SOUND to make it sound abyssic, cultish..you name it.

DOGS OF WAR gives me (to make a shortcut) a feeling of obsessed by cruelty (sodom 85 steamhammer vinyl version) and live in Leipzig by Mayhem (was it in 90? 91? we had it on tape before it came out).

the sound of the drums here are very gutsy and completely insane, and TOTAL black metal. not like the washed out black metal that came and has stayed since the mid 90s.

and these vocals...

...these vocals are on the top 10 list of black metal vocals i ever heard. the whole combination of all these ingredients topped with the abysmal sound makes this the best black metal band (even though i don't know if that is an honourable brand anymore..it was until 1991, atleast) i have discovered since Faustcoven, and one out of maybe ten "bm" bands i've REALLY liked the last 10 years. i know that also Euronymous would support this album, like he also would have supported "skullcrushing armageddon" by IMPIETY and for instance also OLD and VOMITOR.

if you do not understand this sound, i think you would be wise to not protest, but re-evaluate what you think IS black metal in the first place. and then maybe wait 20 years and then try again. for those of you who connect to this the way i did (listen to the blood curdeling screams in the title song "dogs of war", for instance) - WE ARE TRULY BLESSED!!!
